The National Agency for Energy Conservation organized on Monday, July 10, 2023 in the Buhaira 1 region, the closing ceremony of the Tunisian-Norwegian SOFEM cooperation project "Solar Energy for Sustainable Transport" carried out in cooperation between the National Agency for Energy Conservation, the Buhaira Investment Company, and the Norwegian Research Center SINTEF, represented in the realization and exploitation Solar electric boat, in the presence of representatives of the various institutions involved in the design and implementation of the project, the media and senior officials.
It should be noted that the Tunisian-Norwegian cooperation project entitled “Solar Fuel Electric Mobility” (SoFEM), implemented in partnership with the Norwegian research center SINTEF ENERGY, won during the award ceremony on December 14, 2016 in New York, the award for the best project for the year 2016 under the UN-Program. DESA ENERGY GRANT "Powering the future we want".
This project aims to promote solar electric marine mobility in the Middle East and North Africa region and reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with transportation. It consisted of the completion of an experimental project for the manufacture of a boat powered by solar energy, in order to study and collect data on the feasibility of marine electric mobility.

Project Components:
- Technical feasibility studies, determination of installation size, equipment acquisition and pilot project implementation.
- Organizing workshops for Tunisian decision makers in the transport and energy sectors.
- A detailed social, economic and financial study to assess the feasibility of the project, including the possibility of replicating the experience in North Africa and the Middle East.
- Educating decision makers and the general public about the benefits of transportation using renewable energies in the region.
Funding:
- A $1 million gift from the UN-DESA ENERGY GRANT
- $306,000 from the Buhaira Company as funding for the project in the form of cash and in-kind contributions
